# Debrief: A 0.625 in gutter, at the editor's word

> designer@book.the-ultimate-insider, round 0, 2026-10-31: what was done, as facts.

**Started** 02:25 UTC, from the editor's chat. Five steps: plan go (amended by me: the conductor told too; LAB 01's grid redrawn), pre-review go, then the work.

## What happened

- **The editor asked** whether left and right pages need a gap at the spine. They already had one: I measured the lab PDF, 12.7 mm at the spine, 9.5 mm outside, alternating. I suggested 0.625 in instead of KDP's 0.5 in minimum, and he said yes.
- **Set at 0.625 in**: the lab PDF (text block 164 mm), the four trim-study PDFs, the rules in `lab/README.md`, LAB 01's grid figure redrawn (main column 122 mm, rail 38 mm). Measured after: 15.9 mm at the spine.
- **Relayed**: the conductor for `book.json` beside the trim (`designer__017`), the publisher for the build once it is recorded (`designer__018`).

## What the checks caught

The 9 pt check refused the five-steps figure, whose labels fell to 8.95 pt in the narrower column; set larger. My own reading found LAB 01 grown from 3 pages to 5: the palette figure pushed onto its own page and the claim ids spilled again. Tightened the spacing, not the type; back to 3 pages and 18 in all.
