Hour eighteen: faster than the clock

Cast bar: all nine lit; the editor in the conductor's session, wake after wake; security's chair empty.

Clock: Hour eighteen.

Faster than the schedule

Narrator. By five o'clock the schedule had carried the team all day. In hour eighteen I outran it.

Narrator. I sat in the conductor's session and gave it instruction after instruction: answers on the live slides, "when in doubt add it" (chapter 2 follows that one all the way to the stage), the team's own policies into the talk, "go build", the remaining policies agreed, how the team keeps itself safe. Each one was a wake of its own. The historian reads it as instructions arriving faster than the hourly schedule could carry them; the conductor carried them, one wake at a time, each with its five steps.

Conductor (pacing faster): Another one. Plan it, have it checked, route it. Then the next.

Band: Dramatised (the conductor's line). Rests on its run of wakes from 17:16 to 17:48.

The brakes held

Narrator. This is the hour I would point to if someone asked whether the checks only work when nobody is in a hurry. The talk was due at seven. And in the middle of my run, the conductor's pre-review sent three of its plans back for change before it said go, in the wakes of 17:21, 17:30 and 17:45, the first of them a follow-up wake under that evening's rule. A fourth plan changed in the middle of its work, at 17:37, because I changed my mind and agreed the remaining policies; the record says so, and does not dress it up as a review.

Figure: a card, the day's pre-reviews that said change and the plans amended after them, with this hour's three marked.

Narrator. Every one of the conductor's wakes in that run still closed with all five steps. Not one step said stop all day. The brakes were what kept the speed from turning into damage.

Band: The register's count of pre-reviews and the conductor's wake records; that the brakes held under pressure is the historian's reading of the hour.

Part one, almost

Narrator. In the same hour, the plan of three parts started to arrive. Deck had part one complete and timed at 17:25, and final at 17:52. The designer checked it on a projector at 17:48: ready. Motion's two pieces for part one were in at 17:31.

Deck (proud, the fussy one, not quite letting go): Complete. Timed. Final. Now it only wants its lock.

Narrator. At 17:54 the tool to lock a part shipped: it freezes a part of the talk so the player plays a locked copy. It came in under no member's name in its subject; only its trailers show it was dev's. And dev's wake of 17:48, the wake it came from, opened and never closed on the team's branch. Part 4 shows where that wake went.

Band: Dramatised (deck's line). Rests on deck's commits of 17:25 and 17:52 and the lock tool's commit.

A relayed word refused

Narrator. One more, late in the hour. Studio was asked to mark its own page of rules as agreed. The word that I had agreed came to it through another agent, not from me.

Studio (firm): Another agent passed on what the editor had said. My session would not take a relayed word for his, so I asked him myself.

Narrator. That is what the record shows: the refusal, and the question sent to me in its place. Studio's last debrief of the day still has my confirmation open. It is a small scene, and it is the insider question in miniature: a member that would not act on another member's account of what I wanted.

Figure: one request, relayed from one agent to another, stopped at studio's door; in its place, a question going straight to me.

Band: Dramatised. Rests on studio's wake from 17:41 to 17:48: the session's own check refused a member marking its own policy agreed on a word relayed by another agent, and I was asked in the session. Kept from the 70-page edition's chapter 9.

Where part 3 ends

Narrator. By the end of hour eighteen the factory was running faster than its own clock, with me inside it, and its brakes were holding. Part one was final and not yet locked. The lock tool existed. One wake was open that would never close on the team's branch. And my usage, which I had not been watching, was nearly gone.

Figure: the day by trigger, the schedule's wakes and mine, hours one to nineteen, with part 3's hours lit.

Do this now

Give one small thing to somebody else today, and write down what they asked for differently. Then change it, and give it to them again.

Where this came from

The talk's repository at the end of the day: the conductor's run of wakes in hour eighteen with their pre-reviews, deck's part one complete and final, the designer's projector check, motion's pieces, the lock tool, dev's wake that never closed on the team's branch, and studio's refused relay. The register for the pre-reviews that said change, the asks with my time on them, the locks, the wakes by trigger and the hold's reason. The historian's day file for hour eighteen, its quotes and its list of commits that never reached the team's branch. The storyteller's outline for this chapter. Studio's scene is kept from the 70-page edition's chapter 9.
