The opening spread
The editor, Dinis Cruz, in the conductor's session, about 00:56 UTC on 5 November 2026, with two files from the newsroom journalist: a proposal ("The opening spread: a proposal", 5 November) and a two-page mock-up at the book's trim. Kept as given. Never edited. The proposal and the mock-up are kept in team/conductor/from-newsroom/ (2026-11-05__opening-spread-*), the feedback address replaced there by a pointer to FB2.
So I really liked the book, but those first two pages for me felt the weakest of them all. So I asked the journalist agent to have a go, and he created this, and I really like it. What do you think? And can you convert from this to the the book?
How the conductor reads it (not his words)
- OS1, the opening spread: the book's first two pages after the title become the journalist's spread, rebuilt in the book's own pipeline and type (not pasted). Page 1, the hook in his voice: the headline "Nineteen hours. Nine agents. One talk.", the Narrator's "Hi, I am Dinis Cruz" and the day in one paragraph, why the book exists, the nine cast drawings large with a hello line each and security's empty chair greyed, and the line on how the book is told. Page 2, the proof and the path: four numbers, three images of what the factory made, the house beside the policy page and the night log, the five parts in order ("Read it in order"), and the invitation with FB2's channels and the companion site.
- What moves (the proposal's own list): the five-step formula to chapter 23 only; "The book as a map" and its two routes cut; "Zero to presentation" folded into the four numbers; "Who is telling this story" stays after the spread, shorter.
- Every number in the spread is the researcher's to trace before it prints (the 58 slides, the 162 sessions, 00:16, 19:00, the one file). The proposal's two Check lines, "while I was away" and "the workflow behind it is the part I most want to show you", are his to confirm, as in every chapter.
